Women on Air, in collaboration with the All Ireland Science Media Centre, presents a one-day media training workshop for women researchers, supporting greater visibility and diversity of expert voices in the media.
‘Talk the Walk’ is Women on Air’s flagship training course, designed to build confidence and skills for broadcast media.
Ideally suited to researchers with some media experience seeking to further develop their skills, as well as beginners anticipating media interest in their work. Applicants should be active researchers and highly motivated to strengthen their communication skills to engage more effectively with public audiences through television, radio and podcasting.
The workshop also covers understanding audiences, non-verbal communication, time management, and the ethical and practical realities of working with media.

Our Facilitators:
Pat Coyle is a native of Derry city now living in Dublin. She is an award-winning journalist (Channel 4 and RTE) who has worked as a producer and presenter for RTE Television (1985-88). She worked for the BBC (1988-1994) when she lived in Belfast and was a producer on BBC Radio Ulster’s Talkback programme. In 1994, on returning to Dublin she joined RTE again, working as a feature and current affairs producer on RTE Radio One 1994-2005. She has also worked in print journalism contributing to various newspapers.
In 1994 she set up her own media training programme to promote the voices of those underrepresented in the media or on the margins of society. She has worked with NGO’s and various charities and trained people involved in community work, and local and national politics.
She is currently the media trainer for Women on Air, which seeks to promote women’s voices in the media. She currently also works for the Jesuits in Ireland as their Director of Communications.
Jimmy Norman of Norman Media works with WOA to provide bespoke media training aimed at increasing female representation on broadcast media. He has 40 years’ experience in the media industry, working as an editor and cameraperson with a wide range of outlets, including Channel 4, BBC and RTE. As well as covering ‘day-to-day’ news stories, Jimmy has recently covered the war in Ukraine, the Oscars in Hollywood, the US presidential election putting together live programming from the world trade centre, The UK general election in London, Assembly elections in NI and Rugby World Cup coverage from Paris. He brings this professionalism and experience to his work with WOA.
